Vermi-Compost Toilets

This Workshop covered the theory and practice of installing a DIY vermicomposting sewerage system based on a flush toilet. This system combines all the ecological advantages of a dry composting toilet system with the user-friendliness and convenience of a flush toilet. It requires minimal maintenance compared to dry systems and has significant environmental advantages over conventional septic tanks!

Vermicompost toilets use earthworms, mainly species like Eisenia fetida (red wigglers), to break down human waste into compost. Instead of relying just on bacteria, the worms help rapidly decompose solids into rich, odorless humus. These toilets are waterless (or use very little water), low-odor, eco-friendly, and great for off-grid or sustainable living setups. The end product can often be used as fertilizer for non-edible plants
