Cob Oven

People came together to learn how to build their own earthen, wood-fired oven—from the ground up! With muddy hands and stomping feet, they sculpted a fully functional oven using time-honored, natural building techniques.

The workshop covered every stage of the process: from designing the oven to harvesting materials, building the structure, firing it up, and baking with it. Participants began by constructing a solid base using fire-resistant bricks, carefully placed to withstand high temperatures. The foundation was filled with glass bottles, creating an insulating layer that helps heat circulate more efficiently within the oven.

All materials—clay, stone, and sand—were gathered right from the land. Even the paint was crafted by hand, using site-harvested pigments to finish the ovens with beautiful, earthy tones.

This hands-on experience offered not only the skills to build an oven, but a deeper connection to the land and to ancient, sustainable ways of making.
