Our detoxifying trip continues with our herbal bitters ! And this time tackling weak digestion and a good old liver detox!
Bitter herbs are plants that have a bitter taste ranging from mild to very strong from dandelion , milk thistle to Rocca and kale and much more . They are considered a bitter herb because of their aftertaste and ability to become quite bitter the longer they are left in the Earth.. Scientists label bitter as one of the seven basic tastes!
Our body contains tons of receptors for bitter compounds in not only our mouth and tongue, but our stomach, gut, liver, and pancreas.
This is mostly for protective reasons. Our bitter receptors are built as a “warning” to our body, as most dangerous and poisonous things are highly bitter tasting.
The stimulation of these bitter receptors promotes healthy digestion by increasing digestive secretions and stimulate digestive fluids thus reducing bloating, food sensitivities , gases and most digestive issues. The production of other fluids is also activated, including bile which helps to break down fatty foods, microbes and prevent SIBO & yeast overgrowth
This leads to better absorption of nutrients, natural detoxification of the liver and digestive tract, and — thanks to the gut-brain connection — bitters can even have a positive effect on stress.
These herbs are gentle and beneficial in the long run . They are Rich in vitamins A, D, E, K and iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium..
I chose for this broth artichoke (ارضيشوكة), dandelion (هندبة برية) and milk thistle leaves (شوك الحليب), simmered them in hot water and tossed them in a mixer for ultimate benefits of the leaves .. later on to be added in my food or juices. You can also sauté any mix of bitter herbs with some garlic , mushrooms and other herbs or just eat them raw!
